Business and Community Development

As a leader in the New York City Information Technology community, I have created business development and outreach programs with the goal toward elevating and connecting technology leaders and practitioners across industry and government. My experience includes group facilitation and coaching for individual, nonprofit and business clients as well as negotiating partnership agreements, sponsorships and MOUs, and event planning. I have co-produced business and personal development events at the United Nations, Fund for the City of New York, New York Public Library, Bloomberg, PwC, Columbia University, NYU, etc.

Business Development

Training and Advising Startups: I am a small business advisor and experienced entrepreneur. I have facilitated trainings and mentoring for several founder incubator programs and individual startups. I served as an advisor for design at Mucktracker, a K-12 EdTech startup building a media literacy app for developing informed news consumers. I have delivered trainings on customer development and user experience design at Impact Hub NYC, Startup Leadership Program NYC and Project Two.Eight, a Columbia Venture Community program.

I am a long time advisor of Technology Transfer Days, and have facilitated introductions, mentoring and collaborative learning experiences for academic and small business innovators looking to work with federal agencies including the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. I have also provided training and workshops on information architecture and accessible design for the Science Gateways Community Institute.

Connecting GIS Leaders: As a board member of GISMO, a NYC-based geographic information systems association, I developed programs to connect startup communities to one another, to Federal Government agencies and to the public. Notable achievements include facilitating events introducing geospatial startup and other IT CEOs to U.S. Department of Defense officials including Robert Cardillo, former Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and his senior staff, as well as innovation officers at the Department of Homeland Security, Naval Post Graduate School, National Defense University and US Army CENTCOMM and NORTHCOMM operations.

I have participated in planning and facilitating several public events connecting geospatial leaders and academics with partners including the New York Public Library, the Queens Museum, Brooklyn SBDC and the Fund for the City of New York. I am a mentor for the GISMO Job Fair held annually at Hunter College. I am also developing COGITO, an association of GIS leaders from GISMO, New York State GIS Association, URISA, GeoNYC Meetup, ESRI, BetaNYC and directors of academic geography programs at CUNY, Columbia, NYU, and Pratt Institute.

Individual Mentoring and Coaching: People I have mentored have gone on to successful design careers at Capital One Bank, MasterCard and other notable positions. I have provided speaker coaching at the Information Architecture Summit and IAC and offer coaching on presentation and speaking. I gave testimony at the 2019 NYC Charter Revisions hearings of New York City Council and a statement on Dark Patterns at the May 2022 CPPA Pre-Ruling Stakeholder Sessions, and can help craft a persuasive presentation for similar venues.

Community Development Programs

Mentoring the Creative Community: I am a member of several professional associations and meetups that connect and train designers and creative professionals. I served many years as the operations manager for the Information Architecture Institute, developing programs for designers working in digital space. I am a mentor in the User Experience Professionals Association’s New York City Chapter.

I am a documentarian and co-chair of the NYC American Theatre Archive Project, providing preservation tools and guidance to small theater groups in New York. I have co-lead workshops on theater preservation at the CUNY Graduate School and the Center for Jewish History.

Elevating Women: I am a founding member of Columbia College Women and developed a mentoring program through the Columbia College Alumni Association connecting undergraduates to alumnae in fields of interest. I continue to mentor students through the CCAA’s Odyssey Mentoring program.

I served as a delegate to the United Nations program on Women and Technology as a guest of World Pulse, a women’s citizen journalism platform and was an advisor to Women in Open Source, a participant in the Open Camps program at the United Nations, where I presented on Mentoring Women in Technology in 2016.

I continue to speak on and advise programs in developing mentoring and gender diversity initiatives and STEM training for women and girls. I am currently an advisor to Project Two.Eight, a Columbia Venture Community incubator for female founders and Esteem Equalithon, a hackathon for female college students and others who represent underserved communities.

Connecting the Underserved: The technology and information divide continues to put vulnerable and marginalized groups at a disadvantage. Providing tools and training to underserved markets has been a professional and charitable goal of mine for many years. I am working to expand these trainings to organizations who want to connect with these underserved markets through accessible and inclusive design.

I am an advisor to Technology Transfer Days, which connects small businesses and U.S. Veteran entrepreneurs to training, innovation experts and incubators, ranging from local to Federal resources and opportunities. I am also an officer in Kantara Initiative’s Resilient Identifiers for Underserved Populations work group (RIUP-WG), and previously was an advisor on the Identity Ecosystem Steering Group’s trusted identity framework project (IDEFRegistry.org) advocating for user experience and inclusion of vulnerable populations.

I participate in Wikipedia editathons focusing on under-represented groups including indigenous populations, women, African, Latino and Caribbean Americans and the LGBTQ community. I represented Wikimedia at the Information Architecture Institute’s program, Architecting the Information of Georgia House Bill 757 held in May 2016 at the Center for Human and Civil Rights in Atlanta, GA. I have also volunteered as a technical director for the NY Hemophilia Chapter’s annual Walk-a-Thon.
